There is no hotter actor on the planet right now than Andrew Garfield. In Never Let Me Go, the adaptation of Booker Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, co-starring Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, his innocent naïf Tommy – driven by what Garfield calls ‘a massive heart and terrible sense of injustice’ – gives the film its raw, aching soul. Shooting Tommy’s climactic breakdown, Garfield says he wanted to ‘pierce outer space with my soul’. ‘I was close to puking, I couldn’t feel one side of my face afterwards, I gave myself whiplash. It was lovely.’

With wistful eyes and a beaming smile, the 27-year-old actor is passionate and joyful about everything he does, from exposing those depths of vulnerability on-screen (central to his previous performances in Red Riding, The Social Network and James Bulger-inspired drama Boy A) to frolicking about in Mt Baldy, California, for the latest campaign for hip New York fashion label Band of Outsiders. He’s a genuinely charming young man, which is why his phenomenal trajectory – Garfield has just been cast as the new Spider-Man – is certain to leave him the un-starriest of superstars. No razzmatazz, just natural intuitive talent.

About to fly back to LA for the Spiderman shoot, he confesses to an endearing ‘aw shucks’ excitement. ‘The first time I put on the costume,’ he gushes, ‘is a day I’ll never forget.’
